Can Foundation presents Naul Yoo’s solo exhibition Whom Say Ye That I Am?. The exhibition is at the foundation’s two main venues: Space Can and Old House. Widely known as a singer, Yoo has been active as a fine artist since 2001, with both BFA and MFA in Fine Art. Whom Say Ye That I Am? is the first solo exhibition in a year and it includes around 23 works, featuring analogue and digital collages which were mostly created in 2021.
Yoo has created various artworks with everyday objects that convey his belief in God and the soul. The exhibition title, ‘whom say ye that I am’ is quoted from Matthew 16:15; it is a question about the artist himself and as a singer, as well as a question about God as a Christian. In the Fragile series, which encompasses both analogue and digital collage, Yoo digitized the objects from the collage created in the traditional way and transformed them into digital prints. Through this process, he emphasizes the heterogeneity obtained from images that do not exist, and explores the planarity and materiality. The primary colors and fluid lines in the drawings formatively harmonize and captivate the viewer’s eyes.
