Thus Far, and From Now On

Sanghee Park draws attention to the artificial landscapes of the cities and depicts them with her own visual language. She simplifies repeatedly stacked commodities and complex signboards and paints these artificial moments of cities as if a monochrome still-life. This is the artist’s specific creative process that she draws an image on an adhesive sheet attached to a painted wall, and then carves out the image. The artist damages her own image and makes it mingle with the background colors; and therefore, she creates a landscape consisted of various layers of scenes.

In this exhibition at Project Space SARUBIA, Park presents (more like packs) her representative artworks created thus far throughout her entire career as an artist. Each of the four walls in the exhibition space is colored in black, brown, green, and pink that are four colors representing the artist’s oeuvre on the adhesive sheets. She carves out images on some of these walls directly or exhibits her previous works on other colored walls.

It is a difficult task for artists to establish and maintain their artistic philosophy throughout their careers. That may apply to Park as well, that’s why she decided to participate in Project Space SARUBIA’s ‘SO.S’ program two years ago, that helps artists who have many concerns in their works, develop their oeuvre with various specialists. Park mentioned that in the past she just focused on the world surrounding her, but through the program, she got a chance looking inside herself, and focusing on her own, and expresses her thought about herself through her works. In other words, Park reveals her personal emotions through the exhibition rather than just exhibitions her works and develops the space more like her own cave where she can immerse herself in her mind and paintings.

In this exhibition, what is important is to penetrate into her mind landscape viewing the world. This exhibition embraces what she has done so far as well as shows what she can do from now on. It is definitely a turning point of her lifetime journey as an artist.
