Magenta Plains is pleased to present Im Grunde ist es die Wahrheit / Essentially it's the truth, a four person exhibition with paintings by Sophie von Hellermann, David Ostrowski, Gerda Scheepers, and Mark van Yetter.
SOPHIE VON HELLERMANN (b. 1975, Munich, DE) received her BFA from Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and an MFA from Royal College of Art, London. Recent solo exhibitions include Ileden at Greene Naftali, New York, US (2019); Petri Dishes, Parrasch Heijnen Gallery, Los Angeles, US (2018); New Waves at Pilar Corrias, London, UK (2018); Kunstverein Hannover, DE (2017); After a Fashion — A Play with Fire at Vilma Gold, London, UK (2015); Novel Ways at Greene Naftali, New York, US (2013); and Elephant in the Room at Firstsite, Colchester, UK (2013). Recent group exhibitions include The New Frontiers of Painting at Fondazione Stelline, Milan, IT (2017); Jahresgaben 2016 at Bonner Kunstverein, Bonn, DE (2016); Imaginary Portraits: Prince Igor at Gallery Met, Metropolitan Opera, New York, US (2014); and Out of the House, Cranford Collection at Fundación Banco Santander, Madrid, ES (2013). Her work is in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Von Hellermann is a founding member of the London and Düsseldorf-based artist collective hobbypopMUSEUM, active since 2006. Sophie von Hellermann lives and works in London and Kent, United Kingdom.
DAVID OSTROWSKI (b.1981, Cologne, DE) studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf with Albert Oehlen from 2004–2009. He was awarded the Atelierstipendium by the Kölnischer Kunstverein and the Imhoff-Stiftung, Cologne in 2012. He will have an upcoming solo exhibition, Political Paintings at Sundogs in Paris. Recent solo exhibitions include Political Correction at Piece Unique, Cologne, DE (2019); Bei mir geht es in den Keller hoch at Blueproject Foundation, Barcelona, ES (2017); To Lose (a two man show with Michail Pirgelis) at the Leopold-Hoesch-Museum, Düren, DE (2016); The F Word at the ARKEN Museum, Copenhagen, DK and I want to die forever at Kunstraum Innsbruck, AT (both 2015); How to do things left at Rubell Family Collection, Miami, Florida, US and Just do it at the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Turin, IT (both 2014). Ostrowski’s work has also been included in group exhibitions at the M Woods Museum, Beijing, CN (2015), Halle für Kunst & Medien, Graz, AT (2014), and at the ICA, London, UK (2014). Ostrowski’s work also featured in DONT the Music and Art Performance at Halle 9 Kirowwerk, Leipzig, DE (2017). David Ostrowski lives and works in Cologne, Germany.
GERDA SCHEEPERS (b. 1979, Tzaneen, ZA) studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under Rosemarie Trockel and graduated in 2005. She won the Art Cologne New Talents Prize in 2006 and was awarded the Marianne-Defet-Malerei-Stipendium from the Kunstverein Nürnberg in 2012. Recent solo exhibitions include Rooms at Mary Mary, Glasgow, UK (2019); Fabric Actors at Galerie PCP, Paris, FR (2018); Body Corporate at Mary Mary, Glasgow, UK (2016); PSYCHO SOCIO SURFACE at blank projects, Cape Town, ZA (2014); Low and Partial: Romantic Comedy at Kunstverein Nuremberg, Nuremberg, DE (2012); and Medium and Modality at Oslo10, Basel, CH (2012). Gerda Scheepers lives and works in Cape Town, South Africa.
MARK VAN YETTER (b. 1978, East Stroudsburg, PA) co-founded the exhibition space Marquise Dance Hall (2007-2015), which started as a book and record store in New York before transitioning to an itinerant gallery in Istanbul. In 2016, he was the recipient of the Fürstenberg Zeitgenössisch Residency. Mark van Yetter lives and works in the Poconos, PA and New York, NY.
