ORLAN

Born in 1947 in Saint-Etienne, France, ORLAN is one of the most provocative artists of today, always pushing the artistic boundaries, and defying the laws of nature and social norms. Internationally renowned for her performances involving cosmetic surgery, the artist grants herself unfettered freedom and pushes her creative potential by continuing to take as medium her body and her life. In 1964, at the age of seventeen, ORLAN declared that she would make her body “a forum of public debate.” Based on this postulate, ORLAN has continued to explore the issues relating to representation, sexuality, and the question of identity for the past fifty years.
